Stole The Ride

Malta O'Gorman

Way past bed time, in wee hours before dawn
I jumped out of bed for my day was on.
Just in time as the snow started to fall,
Changed to winter clad and tiptoed down the hall.

Raced to the closet clenchin' my old coat,
Slipped it on as it would keep me like toast.
Plunked on the old hat and much-worn mitts,
Slippin' on the ole boots that barely fit.

Scrambled out the house as quiet as a kitten.
Bent on ridin' that new sled I was smitten.
Fast as lightenin' headin' straight to the door.
Behind reminiscent days of sleddin' years before.

Winds a howlin and white blowin' 'round.
Much snow has already covered the ground.
Trudgin' along only my footprints to see,
Headin' straight for that ole hill waitin' on me.

Just a bit further to reach my goal,
Soon to fly down that hill covered in snow.
With glee I'm sleddin' like days in the past
I'll be the first and probably it'll be the last.

In the brisk of the early mornin' air
I witnessed the year's first squall share.
Perhaps this is my favorite time of the year
Just me the sled and winter's atmosphere.

My favorite spot in all the sights I know,
This hill to slide down in the first gust of snow.
Holding on tight I give a shove with my feet.
With pickin' up speed the chill chatterin' teeth.

Faster and faster down the hill I go,
Glidin' down the fresh flurry of snow.
Holdin' on tight with a fast grip
Weavin' and wobblin' from hip to hip.

Delighted in what the morn has given me,
Only if others were here to see.
As years before I've had this trill,
Just me the wind, the snow and the hill.

Now I must hurry get back inside
Before the kids realize I stole the first ride.
I must wipe all evidence off the sled.
Quickly, before sunrise I'll get back in bed.

Truly this is a winter wonderland
The kids in bed and me out on the lam.
No one will know I'm erasin' the evidence.
Who'd ever guess about my pertinence?
